Year 2015 will always remembered for two sensational movies getting huge response at box office. These movies are ‘Angrej’ by Simarjit Singh and ‘Sardaar ji’by Rohit Jugraj. Both movies were succeeded in establishing new mile-stones in polllywood town. Sardaarji is a Punjabi fantasy film directed by Rohit Jugraj, starring Diljit Dosanjh, Mandy Takhar and Neeru Bajwa in lead roles. Sardaar Ji is one of the first fantasy films to be made in Punjabi cinema and had the biggest opening ever for a Punjabi film in Punjab. The movie’s cast was as Diljit Dosanjh as Jaggi Singh, the ghost Hunter from Samrala, Neeru Bajwa as Pinky, the spirit (ghost), Mandy Takhar as Jasmine Kaur and Jaswinder Bhalla as the spirit of English Master Amreek Singh Master.
The movie had a record opening in history of Punjabi Cinema,it opened to 100% occupancies and shattered previous openings record of Jatt & Juliet 2. It collected 2.5 crore on its first day in Punjab. Sardaar Ji also earned ₹14.45 crore in its opening weekend recovering its making costs of ₹11 crore easily. In its first running week Sardaar Ji collected over 28 crore (US$4.2 million), highest ever in Punjabi cinema. ‘CNN-IBN’, ‘Hindustan Times’ & ‘The Tribune’ gave positive reviews to the movie. Film was also reviewed by British media like The Guardian.
Angrej is a 2015 Punjabi film directed by Simerjit Singh and starring Amrinder Gill, Ammy Virk, Binnu Dhillon, Aditi Sharma, Sargun Mehta and Sardar Sohi. The screenplay was written by Amberdeep Singh. Angrej was screened at Sikhlens: Sikh Arts & Film Festival -2015. It is a family film which shows the rural Punjab of the 1940s. All actors portray characters typical of 1945. Amrinder Gill as Angrej Singh/Geja, Aditi Sharma as Maarho, Ammy Virk as Haakam, Sargun Mehta as Dhan Kaur, Binnu Dhillon as Aslam.
Angrej had a significant opening in India as it made 4.05 crore in its first weekend. It also opened well at the US box office, At the overseas box office, it has grossed approximately ₹3.82 crore from 80 screens on its first weekend. Angrej was second greatest hit movie of 2015 after Diljit Dosanjh’s Sardaar Ji. Till 2nd weekend, movie has crossed more than 20 crore internationally, it grossed 10.4 crore only in Overseas markets.In its 3rd week Angrej dangerously effected the earnings of newly released Punjabi film ‘Ramta Jogi’. Angrej is the second highest-grossing Punjabi film in 2015 and the fourth highest-grossing Punjabi film of all time.
The Tribune gave 4 stars out 5 to the film. Angrej was screened at Sikhlens: Sikh Arts & Film Festival of 2015.
